This is a delicious and incredibly easy wholesome brown bread recipe.

It is actually my mum’s recipe and her bread is so popular with those who visit her house. No matter what time of the day or time of the year you will always find some freshly made brown bread in her kitchen.  On the very rare occasion it isn’t made you will find a stock pile in her freezer.

Here is her recipe, I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Wholesome Brown Bread

  • 690g or 3 cups of brown flour
  • 180g or 1 cup of plain white flour
  • 330g or 3 cups of oats
  • 2 heaped tsp bread soda
  • 2 heaped tsp melted butter
  • 1/2 cup of seeds  – I find pumpkin seeds works well in this recipe
  • 1 litre of Buttermilk

  1. Prehead the oven to 220 degrees celcius
  2. Grease 2, 1 litre loaf tins. I use 2 one litreloaf tins.
  3. Put all the dry ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Be sure to sieve the bread soda.
  4. Add 3/4 of the buttermilk to the dry ingredients.
  5. Mix well.
  6. Once combined it should form a wet dough.
  7. If all the ingredients haven’t combined or if it is a dry dough then add a little more buttermilk.
  8. Keep additing a little more buttermilk until a wet dough is formed.
  9. Divide the mixture between the 3 loaf tins.
  10. Place in the oven.  Turn down the oven immediately to 200 degrees celcius.
  11. Cook for 30 minutes.
  12. Then cover with tin foil and cook for another 20 minutes.
  13. Check if the bread is cooked but inserting a metal skewer.  The skewer should come out clean.
  14. Once cooked turn out onto a metal wire to cool.
  15. Enjoy!
